Help the Potomac Nursery collect tree seeds to take to state greenhouses. When the baby trees are big enough, they will shore up shorelines against erosion and provide habitat and food for wildlife in Maryland.

You needn’t travel across the Atlantic to enjoy traditional drummers and dancers, a market of crafts/clothing/jewelry/ethnic food, and a host of children’s activities to feel like you’ve been to west Africa. Share the rich heritage of Kunta Kinte at the very place he landed in Annapolis so many years ago. CCM faciltates the children’s tent in which you can make drums, masks, and other traditional crafts.

Catandabird Children's Concert

Saturday, January 22: Catandabird Children’s Concert
This delightful ensemble is the brain child of Vasily Taranov (Mr. V) who picked up musical
tidbits from around the world along his way to Washington, D.C.. Mr. V. is joined by Emily
Chimiak, a young French/American singer and violinist living in Crofton whose honest and
fresh sound results from playing concerts at family gatherings where everyone claps and sings. Their musical discoveries are carried from one project to the next, as evidenced
by the latest CD, a Russian folk-gypsy-early rock-inspired collection of children’s songs.

The performers will chat with the audience after the performance and autograph CD’s
which will be available for sale. 10-10:30 am.

All ages. Advance tickets (through Friday, January 21): $5 / $4 CCM members. At the
door: $10 / $8 CCM members.

Wizards in the Air for October

Are you ready to chase the golden snitch? Cadette Girl Scout Troop 820 from Annapolis is conjuring up a special treat for Harry Potter fans. Wizard Fair - a magical event for ages 6 and up – will take place at CCM on Saturday, October 23^rd from 3 to 6 pm. Turn left on Privet Lane, step through the door onto "Platform 9 3/4" and enjoy Harry Potter and wizard-themed games, crafts, and treats. Mix potions, try magic tricks, taste exotic jellybeans, and visit the Leaky Cauldron for some pumpkin juice. Dress as your favorite magic character. Fun is guaranteed for children ages 6 and up. Note, if you look like a grown up but can access your inner wizard, you’re just as likely to have a good time. Your $10 admission fee benefits CCM.

This party is for swashbucklers and seafarers salty enough to know how to arrange for a babysitter on a summer’s eve. Chesapeake Children’s Museum is one of the lucky non-profits selected to benefit from the Best of Annapolis and Eastern Shore Party produced by What’s Up? Magazine. The event will be held at the Leow’s Hotel, 126 West Street, on Thursday, June 24th from 6 to 9 pm. That’s 4 bells. The theme - you could’ve seen it from the crow’s nest a league away - is “Set Your Compass Toward Local Treasures.” Included in admission will be live music with Doug Segree and fabulous food from 35 of the best restaurants in the area. Yum! You can support CCM by: donating a “treasure” for our coconut tree game, coming to the party, and taking a chance at popping a winning coconut. (Okay, so they’re balloons.) Prizes could be gift certificates or items – we’re especially looking for jewelry and nautical / adventure related prizes. You know, things a buccaneer would go to great lengths to acquire (without hurting anyone, of course!). Call Dale or Debbie at CCM to arrange drop off or pick up of booty.

The calendar was created by members of the Early Childhood Coalition of Anne Arundel County, in which CCM is a partner.

Saturday, March 20: Maryland Day at CCM “Maryland Had Dinosaurs”

Many sites in and around Annapolis are offering special activities in celebration of our state’s birthday. CCM is participating with $1 admission all day Saturday, March 20, from 10 am to 4 pm. Go WAY back in Maryland’s history with fossil-making and other dinosaur activities. $1 for ages 1 and up. For a listing of activities at other sites, go to: www.fourriversheritage.org.

Tax Break! All Maryland Taxpayers Qualify

The Maryland State Legislature approved a bill that allow individuals – not just companies – to earn a tax credit for donating $500 or more to an approved non-profit. CCM has approval through Dec. 31, 2010 to take donations of $500 or more to qualify you for 50% back when you file your Maryland return. These funds are needed to move ahead with the expansion of CCM’s facility. We are getting close to our match of $115,00 in state funds to add a room for cooking and crafts classes, video and live performances and more.

A Gift For All Our Children

This holiday season please remember Chesapeake Children’s Museum when you think about gift giving at this time of year. You can purchase CCM admission passes or a gift membership for families on your list. If you are renewing your own family’s membership, consider the Funded level so that a membership can be given to a local family in need.

End-of-year giving is a tradition for many families as a way to share with others. It is also a good time to think about tax deductions. Time is running out for the DOUBLE gift opportunity for tax credits to Maryland businesses. A donation of $500 or more (in cash or goods) not only benefits CCM, but earns the giver 50% of the gift back as a tax credit. A $1,000 gift earns the donor $500 off 2009’s Maryland tax liability. If no taxes are owed, it can be applied for up to 5 years in the future. CCM has until December 31st to offer $15,000 in tax credits to Maryland business owners. That could mean $30,000 toward building a better CCM for all our children.

Volunteers are always needed at CCM to keep the place tidy, facilitate activities, and otherwise keep the museum going full steam ahead. The board of directors meets monthly and works on various duties in between. You can help with tiling the floor! (Training and supervision

Annapolis History Day for Girl Scouts

1-5 pm (Brownies can leave at 3:30 and come back for a Virginia Reel at 4:45 pm)
Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes will enjoy an afternoon of history-themed activities and will contribute stitches on a community tapestry.
The scouts will fulfill requirements for:
Cadettes: Preserving our Past
Juniors: Local Lore or Junior Colonist (order from New Jersey council)
Brownies: Listening to the Past or Life in Colonial Times (order from New Jersey council)
Activities include traditional games, songs, and dancing; candle-making; an outdoor scavenger hunt (dress for the weather!); and meeting local historians.
Please bring a snack for each scout.
Juniors and Cadettes, bring a digital camera for the troop.
Cost: $1 per scout. Accompanying adults free.

Volunteer of the Month

Our volunteer of the month, Charmaine Edwards, loves to work with children. She finds CCM to be a very comfortable environment to work in and appreciates the benefits to its visitors. She’s gotten to know some of the regular visitors since starting here a year ago. She enjoys helping them to do art projects and other activities. Other volunteers agree Charmaine loves to help everyone and is a fantastic volunteer. Says Reke Forrester, another volunteer, “we try to follow in her tracks!”

Itsy Bitsy Yoga

A baby and grown-up yoga class will be offered for infants, ages 6 weeks to just before crawling (before 10 months). The quiet atmosphere required for the class prohibits observations by other family members. Older siblings are welcome to play in the museum with an accompanying adult during the class at regular admission. Touch-A-Truck

Get up close and personal with some of your favorite big rigs, construction vehicles, public safety equipment and various kinds of real world vehicles. There will be plenty of other activities including games and crafts for the family.

Funds are needed to make our planned expansion a reality – a room for cooking, crafts, video viewing, and computers. Here’s how it works. Contribute cash or materials worth $500 or more, send in a one-page form, and voila, you get back confirmation of a state tax credit worth 50% of the donation.
